SUMMARY:Mindfulness Toronto Presents Free Workshop: Being Unblended; Effortless Mindfulness Meets Internal Family Systems Saturday Sept 27 10-11 AM
DESCRIPTION:Being Unblended: Effortless Mindfulness Meets Internal Family Systems with Dr. Kimberly Sogge C.Psych \nWhat if healing didn’t require efforting your way to peace\, but instead relaxing into the Self that’s already here? In this experiential talk\, clinical psychologist and mindfulness teacher Dr. Kimberly Sogge will explore the intersection of Loch Kelly’s Effortless Mindfulness and Richard Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems (IFS)—two elegant\, compassionate approaches to awakening and psychological healing. \nTogether\, we will: \n\nExplore how the IFS model of “Self” aligns with the open-hearted awareness of effortless mindfulness\nPractice gentle “glimpse” meditations that unhook us from the thinking mind into a spacious\, loving presence.\nLearn how to unblend from reactive parts without suppressing or bypassing them\nDiscover how Self-led presence can become a trustworthy inner refuge in daily life and in therapeutic work\n\nWhether you’re a clinician\, a meditator\, or simply someone seeking a kinder relationship with yourself\, this session will offer tools for integrating nondual awareness and parts work into your mindfulness journey. \nDr. Kimberly Sogge C.Psych is a Canadian Psychologist and the founder of Ottawa River Integrative Mental Health Inc.\, a hybrid group practice offering evidence-based psychology and psychotherapy focused on wellbeing and growth. She completed her academic training at McGill University and her doctoral training in Texas at both Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin. After completing her Ph.D.\, she returned to Canada to raise her children as Canadians and to serve in clinical and leadership roles within hospital-based mental health care. \nAt Ottawa River\, Dr. Sogge integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS)\, nondual mindfulness\, and compassion science in her work with clients and clinicians alike. \nShe is a member of the international Plum Village mindfulness community founded by Zen teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh\, and host of Dr. Sogge: The Art and Science of Thriving\, a podcast exploring how psychological science and contemplative wisdom can support human flourishing. \n\nDate:Saturday\, September 27th\nTime:10 – 11 AM\nSpeaker: Kimberly Sogge\, C. Psych\, Founder of Ottawa River Integrative Mental Health\n\nTo Register go to Event Brite

SUMMARY:Cultivating Presence & Self-Compassion for Therapists’ Self-Care with Dr. Shari Geller\, Ph.D.\, C. Psych
DESCRIPTION:A MINDFULNESS TORONTO PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY MEETING\n\nPlease join Dr. Shari Geller for a talk on therapeutic presence (TP)\, self-compassion\, and self-care for therapists. Offering compassionate care\, sustained attention\, and psychotherapy\, without a balance of compassion and care for self\, can lead to burn-out and exhaustion. \nThis talk will explore the relationship of mindful self-compassion (Neff and Germer\, 2018) and therapeutic presence (Geller\, 2017; Geller & Greenberg\, 2012\, 2023)\, with a particular focus on effective therapeutic relationships and therapist well-being. Since presence and self-compassion need to be directly experienced to be understood\, this will include a brief introduction to the topic and experiential practice. \nTherapeutic presence is a way of being that optimises the doing and techniques of therapy and for clinical relationships. TP provides clients with a sense of safety\, allowing them to be seen\, heard\, understood\, and “feel felt\,” while also strengthening the therapeutic alliance. TP also invites clinicians to work on their own balance of presence and compassion with self and clients\, ensuring they remain centred and effective. \nSelf-compassion is a key resource in maintaining clinicians’ presence and working with the barriers to presence. SC involves meeting our emotions and difficult experience with mindfulness\, common humanity\, kindness\, and warmth. Research shows that self- compassion is also strongly associated with emotional well-being\, healthy habits\, and more fulfilling relationships. \nTherapeutic presence and self-compassion are key underlying factors in effective therapeutic relationships and are intimately related to one another. Self-compassion allows clinicians to return to presence when they are challenged by difficult emotions or stress. Together\, therapeutic presence and self-compassion are powerful resources for counsellors to maintain emotional balance in the midst of challenging clinical work and\nto prevent caregiver fatigue and burn-out. \nDr. Shari Geller is an author\, clinical psychologist\, and certified Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teacher\, offering training modules in therapeutic presence internationally as part of a longer-term vision of having presence be a foundational training across psychotherapy approaches. Shari co-authored the book\, Therapeutic Presence: A Mindful Approach to Effective Therapeutic Relationships – 2 nd  Edition (2022) with Dr. Leslie Greenberg. Shari’s book: A Practical Guide For Cultivating Therapeutic Presence (2017)\, offers hands on tools and guidance for cultivating and strengthening presence in therapy. Shari is a co-editor on a new book: Grounding Psychotherapy in Self-Compassion (2025). \nShari is the co-director of the Centre for MindBody Health\, in Toronto\, where she offers training\, supervision and therapy in Emotion-Focused therapy (EFT) and Mindfulness and Self-Compassion modalities for individuals and couples. She is a therapist\, supervisor\, and trainer in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). Shari serves on the teaching faculty in Health Psychology at York University and is Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto\, in association with Music and Health Research Collaboratory (MaHRC). She is a co-developer and part of the core faculty of the Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy (SCIP) certificate program and is Membership and Networking Committee Chair for the International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy (isEFT). Shari enjoys playing the HandPan and djembe and founded the Therapeutic Rhythm and Mindfulness Program (TRM™). Her love of nature and her dogs\, along with her 35-year personal meditation practice help to keep her present in the moment. \nFor more about Shari click on:  https://www.sharigeller.ca/ or  https://www.cmbh.ca/ \nFor more information about Mindfulness Toronto go to: https://mindfulnesstoronto.net/ \nLive Online Via Zoom: Register on Eventbrite by clicking the Website: Link Below

SUMMARY:Chronic Pain and the Role of Mindfulness with Amy Hondronicols: An Evening Workshop with Amy Hondronicals Oct 5 2021
DESCRIPTION:This will be an interactive workshop with a number of mindfulness practices and time for Q&A \nAmy will define chronic pain and mindfulness\, from the context of her approach to practice of physiotherapy.   \nShe will discuss:  \n\nThe existence of pain with and without damage\, the example of phantom limb pain\, and how the context affects pain perception.\nNeuroplasticity and how is that related to mindfulness. She will discuss brain maps\, how they are affected by pain and injury\, use\, and mindfulness.\nThe stress response in pain and the acute and long-term changes that can happen. \n\n\nThe connection between thoughts\, emotions and pain \nMindful strategies to help cope with chronic pain: movement\, graduated challenges\, breathing practices\, progressive muscle relaxation\, positive self-talk\, and education \n\n  \nAmy is a physiotherapist working in a public setting. She encounters people dealing with chronic pain on a daily basis\, and this has shaped her practice to be aware of the factors that affect pain in every interaction. She thinks that mindfulness plays a key role in how physiotherapy can help people move better\, and cope with pain. In particular\, she is interested in how mindful movement can power change in the nervous system. Some of her favourite ways to move are sailing on the Bay or biking through Hamilton!

SUMMARY:Mindfulness in Sleep and Dreams with Jivasu: a half day workshop Saturday Sept. 18 2021
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Sept 18\, 2021 9:00 – 12:00 By Zoom \nDreams and sleep play an important role in healing\, \ creativity\, and spiritual growth. They are part of our subconscious and protect the brain in many ways\, including reducing information overload\, removing toxic energy of trauma through nightmares\, informing about repressed emotions and desires\, helping us to learn\, and accessing our creativity. Many great inventions\, including the discovery of DNA structure occurred in a dream. \nWe can train ourselves to meditate in dreams to experience higher levels of consciousness.  In Tibetan Buddhism\, a full yoga of dreams and sleep was created for this purpose. In Indian tradition\, the dream state is described as a distinct state of consciousness. In many ancient healing traditions\, dream diagnosis is used to assess the state of a person’s health. \nThis retreat is suitable for beginners\, intermediate\, or advanced meditators. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn about the science\, psychology\, and spirituality of sleep and dreams. You will practice techniques to remember and interpret dreams for healing\, creativity\, and spiritual growth. The workshop will include talk\, question and answer sessions\, and the practice of breathing exercises and meditation. \nJivasu is a physician\, spiritual teacher and the founder of the Natural Spirituality movement. Natural Spirituality is to unlock the powers of the Natural Self. It is grounded in science and the body. He has also studied mind-body medicine at Harvard. He teaches Natural Spirituality\, Nada Yoga (Yoga of sacred chants and music)\, Kundalini Yoga and Mind-Body Medicine all over the world. \nTo register go to Event Brite \nQuestions?mindfulnesshamilton@gmail.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mindful Self Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an evidence-based\, 8-week\, training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research of Dr. Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Dr. Christopher Germer\, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care and understanding. \n \nSelf-compassion can be learned by anyone\, even those who feel uncomfortable when they are good to themselves. It is a courageous attitude that stands up to harm– including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism\, self-isolation\, or self-absorption. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience\, allows us to admit and accept our shortcomings\, motivate ourselves with kindness\, forgive ourselves when needed\, relate wholeheartedly to others\, and be more authentically ourselves. Rapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being\, less anxiety\, less depression and stress\, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise\, and more satisfying personal relationships. And it is easier than you think! \nTaught by MSC Trained Teachers\, Mary Linda Burgess and Natalie Sobel.
