SUMMARY:A Taste of Mindfulness - A free introductory workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive one-hour workshop\, participants will be introduced to the basic principles of mindfulness and mindfulness practice. The content is grounded in neuroscience and psychology\, with practical tips and techniques that can be readily applied to daily life\, helping to improve mental focus\, emotional resilience\, and increase overall wellbeing. A Taste of Mindfulness is geared towards a broad audience. Prior knowledge of mindfulness or experience with mindfulness practice is not required. \nThis workshop provides a taste of Colin’s 8 week experiential program – The Art of Mindfulness: which is based on the world class Search Inside Yourself series\, developed by Google\, which is designed to help individuals develop emotional intelligence\, resilience and cultivate skillful mental habits by learning how the mind and emotions function \nColin De France ( mindfulbreath.ca ) has a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology\, minoring in Food Science from the University of Guelph. He spent the first 25 years of his working career\, as a senior manager\, consultant\, entrepreneur\, and business owner in the food industry. \nAbout 10 years ago\, Colin began a personal journey of self-discovery with an exploration of the practices of meditation and yoga. He has advanced teaching certifications in classical yoga and meditation\, and is a certified Thai yoga massage therapist. \nTeaching mindfulness evolved as a natural extension of his personal practice and formal yoga training. \nColin has conducted mindfulness workshops publicly and for large and small corporations\, as well as running workshops and yoga programs for underprivileged youth in his community. \nIn his experience\, Colin has learned that it is not what we do\, how we look\, or what we have that impacts the quality of our lives\, but rather the level of involvement and awareness we choose to live with. \nMindfulness\, meditation and yoga have been a major part of Colin’s journey and success. Giving back\, Colin’s desire is to share the tools and techniques for wellbeing with as many people as possible. \nPre-registration is required by getting a ticket at Event Brite .

SUMMARY:8-Session Making Friends With Yourself Online - (Ages 11-13)~(Grades 6-8) Tues. /Thur. 4:00 – 6:00 EDT
DESCRIPTION:Making Friends with Yourself (MFY) is a program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion in teens ages 11-13. MFY teaches core principals and practice that enable the young person to respond to the challenges of these critical years with kindness and compassion. \nAdolescence is a time of change and growth. It is the period reserved for rebellion and self-discovery\, but as the demands of life increase for teens \, this time is often fraught with confusion\, anxiety or depression. For many teens these challenges led to disconnection. \nIn this course\, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours a day\, teens engage in developmentally appropriate activities and carefully crafted practices and meditations\, which provide them with the opportunity to learn how to navigate the emotional ups and downs of life with greater ease. Backed by research\, findings indicate increases in emotional well-being and greater resilence after taking the course. \nFollowing in the footsteps of the adult MSC program\, MFY is rooted in the three key components of self-compassion: self-kindness\, common humanity\, and mindful\, balanced awareness. These elements serve to open the hearts of teens to their own suffering\, so they can learn to give themselves what they truly need\, recognize they are not alone in their suffering\, and encourage an open-minded acceptance of the struggle they are facing. \nQuotes from young people who completed our Spring MFY ONLINE: \n“I didn’t know about these practices and they really helped. I’ve been really happy lately.” \n“my take away is being kind to myself and to saying good things to me too.” \n“Mindfulness and self-compassion equals living in the moment.” \n“I’m learning to love myself more.” \n“My take aways …soothing touch\, tracing your palm… I can change how I feel and think and saying words to yourself that you might say to a friend.” \n“Really liked the Compassionate Friend practice…learned a lot … also knowing I am able to go to a safe place.”
