Prof.\, Department of Family Medicine\, McMaster University \nDiana Tikasz MSW\, RSW\, Coordinator of Mindfulness\, Compassion and Resilience Programs at Hamilton Health Sciences\, Clinical Specialist with the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre \nTARGET AUDIENCE:\nThere are no pre-requisite requirements for this course. \nCourse Description: \nMindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically supported 8 week training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion.  Based on research by Dr. Kristen Neff and Christopher Germer\, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care and understanding.  Rapidly growing research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional wellbeing\, decreased anxiety\, less depression and stress\, maintenance of healthy habits\, and satisfying personal relationships.  Self-compassion can be learned by anyone.  It fosters emotional strength and resilience\, allowing one to admit to one’s shortcomings\, motivating oneself with kindness\, forgiving oneself as needed\, relating wholeheartedly to others\, and being oneself more authentically. \nLEARNING OUTCOMES:\nAt the end of this course you will be able to: \n\nPractice self-compassion in daily life\nUnderstand the empirically supported benefits of self-compassion\nMotivate oneself with kindness rather than criticism\nHandle difficult emotions with greater ease\nTransform challenging relationships\nManage caregiver fatigue\nPractice the art of savouring and self-appreciation\n\nSPECIAL COURSE FEATURES:\nThis course includes a half-day mindfulness silent retreat (Saturday February 24\, 2018 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) focusing on self-compassion skills. \nThis is a pilot project so participant feedback is crucial to the further development of this curriculum. Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation after each session and participate in a focus group following the completion of the program.

DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness is a way of meeting life’s challenges with greater calm and wisdom by practicing reflection and paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity.
