DESCRIPTION:Steve Ferrell teaches Yoga\, Meditation\, and Mindfulness practices in the Hamilton area. Steve has been studying and practicing meditation for a decade. Over this time he has worked with many different techniques from different lineages of Yoga\, and Buddhism as well as studying Western-based psychological perspectives. \nHis searching finally settled when he found Zen practice 5 years ago through the teaching of his primary teacher Shoken Michael Stone. He believes that a sitting practice is essential for survival in an “Attention Deficit Society”. He also strongly believes in the power of meditation to help calm habitual thought patterns\, and centre one’s self directly in the middle their life. He helps his students find the simplicity and beauty within the work of sitting and mindfulness based practices.  He continues to study the Dharma with Michael as well as other teachers including Roshi Enkyo O’Hara\, Peter Levitt\, and Pascal Auclair. \nWe have built a beautiful meditation room at Zee Float for those looking to find some “space” in their busy day.  We have a talented team of meditation instructors to help guide you into a beautiful practice of learning to sit still\, relax\, and pay attention. DESCRIPTION:Learn to manage difficulty with more ease and kindness \nMindful Self-Compassion (MSC) combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance our emotional well-being. While mindfulness increases our awareness of the present\, self-compassion encourages greater kindness and understanding of periods of suffering. It also helps us accept our flaws and better understand our challenges. \nMSC is a research-supported program developed by Dr. Kristin Neff and Dr. Christopher Germer. Research on self-compassion have shown that it boosts happiness and improves relationships while reducing anxiety\, depression and shame. Increased levels of self-compassion can transform empathy fatigue into wholehearted engagement with others. \nParticipants Will Learn\nTo befriend their self–critic\, develop self-compassion skills\, and foster goodwill towards themselves and others. The 5-day intensive explores typical responses as difficulties arise. \nWho Should Attend\nAll are welcome. It is especially beneficial for graduates of mindfulness-based programs\, such as MBCT/MBSR. No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is required. DESCRIPTION:Increasingly\, health-care institutions are coming under pressure to do more with less\, to provide quality care with less resources and to improve the experience of patients and their families. \nAs a result\, many health-care workers find themselves grappling with increased levels of stress\, burnout\, compassion/empathy fatigue and conflict within their teams and colleagues. \nThere is a way to create workplaces that both support physician/staff/learner; one that creates resilience and enables compassionate care not only for patients but for fellow co-workers as well. \nMindful Self-Compassion provides emotional strength and resilience\, allowing us to admit our shortcomings\, motivate ourselves with kindness\, forgive ourselves when needed\, relate wholeheartedly to others\, and be more authentically ourselves. Based on the ground-breaking research of Kristin Neff and \nthe clinical expertise of Christopher Germer\, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care and understanding. \nThis mindfulness course is an experiential curriculum for all health care providers. The program uses didactic teaching\, experiential work including group\, large and small\, interpersonal work as well as individual work. \nWe will meet for 2 1/2 hours each Tuesday and will have a half day retreat after session 5. DESCRIPTION:Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Training – Guelph\, ON\nPre-Approved for 20 CE Credits with the\nCanadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association \nIntegrating principles drawn from neuroscience\, attachment theory\, Somatic Experiencing and trauma-informed care to increase safety\, embodiment\, choice\, voice and empowerment for trauma survivors \nMindfulness has become a popular tool in many clinicians’ toolkits\, and the research behind it is overwhelmingly positive.  Trauma survivors often seek out mindfulness or other forms of meditation or spirituality\, such as yoga\, to support them in their healing journey\, or have been “prescribed” these by a professional.  However\, without the proper awareness or safeguards in place\, these practices can be activating and re-traumatizing for some people\, leading to many adverse effects\, such as anxiety\, panic\, psychotic breaks\, terror\, dissolution of ego boundaries\, flashbacks\, repressed material resurfacing\, and uncomfortable physical sensations associated with unresolved trauma responses. \nOthers turn to contemplative practices as a form of spiritual bypassing\, a way to dissociate and avoid or disconnect from distressing symptoms.  As is true with other approaches\, no one modality is a panacea and recognizing when a tool is the right fit or not is important.  This East meets West workshop will review the shadow side of spirituality\, and introduce practical principles to adapt mindfulness in a trauma-informed way.  Participants will be introduced to: \n\nIntegrating a trauma lens of polyvagal theory\, attachment theory and psychophysiology into mindfulness\nAdverse effects and benefits of contemplative practices\, in particular for those with early developmental trauma\nBody memory\, the biological cycle of stress activation\, defensive responses and completion\, and how thwarted self-protective efforts can manifest during meditation\nFrameworks and principles to support a more nuanced approach to mindfulness\, in alignment with staged models of trauma treatment\nCaveats around breath work practices for trauma\nWays to adapt mindfulness to support client safety\, choice\, voice and empowerment

DESCRIPTION:Explore the therapeutic benefits of MBCT while looking at its clinical applications. This is the first module of our Core MBCT Facilitation Certificate Program. \nMindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines the practice of mindfulness meditation with the tools of cognitive therapy. This highly experiential workshop adapts this treatment to health-care providers for personal use. Participants will explore habitual modes of mind that characterize changes in mood while simultaneously developing skills and a new relationship to these states.
