SUMMARY:8-Session Making Friends With Yourself Online - (Ages 11-13)~(Grades 6-8) Tues. /Thur. 4:00 – 6:00 EDT
DESCRIPTION:Making Friends with Yourself (MFY) is a program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion in teens ages 11-13. MFY teaches core principals and practice that enable the young person to respond to the challenges of these critical years with kindness and compassion. \nAdolescence is a time of change and growth. It is the period reserved for rebellion and self-discovery\, but as the demands of life increase for teens \, this time is often fraught with confusion\, anxiety or depression. For many teens these challenges led to disconnection. \nIn this course\, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours a day\, teens engage in developmentally appropriate activities and carefully crafted practices and meditations\, which provide them with the opportunity to learn how to navigate the emotional ups and downs of life with greater ease. Backed by research\, findings indicate increases in emotional well-being and greater resilence after taking the course. \nFollowing in the footsteps of the adult MSC program\, MFY is rooted in the three key components of self-compassion: self-kindness\, common humanity\, and mindful\, balanced awareness. These elements serve to open the hearts of teens to their own suffering\, so they can learn to give themselves what they truly need\, recognize they are not alone in their suffering\, and encourage an open-minded acceptance of the struggle they are facing. \nQuotes from young people who completed our Spring MFY ONLINE: \n“I didn’t know about these practices and they really helped. I’ve been really happy lately.” \n“my take away is being kind to myself and to saying good things to me too.” \n“Mindfulness and self-compassion equals living in the moment.” \n“I’m learning to love myself more.” \n“My take aways …soothing touch\, tracing your palm… I can change how I feel and think and saying words to yourself that you might say to a friend.” \n“Really liked the Compassionate Friend practice…learned a lot … also knowing I am able to go to a safe place.”

SUMMARY:A Taste of Mindfulness - A free introductory workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive one-hour workshop\, participants will be introduced to the basic principles of mindfulness and mindfulness practice. The content is grounded in neuroscience and psychology\, with practical tips and techniques that can be readily applied to daily life\, helping to improve mental focus\, emotional resilience\, and increase overall wellbeing. A Taste of Mindfulness is geared towards a broad audience. Prior knowledge of mindfulness or experience with mindfulness practice is not required. \nThis workshop provides a taste of Colin’s 8 week experiential program – The Art of Mindfulness: which is based on the world class Search Inside Yourself series\, developed by Google\, which is designed to help individuals develop emotional intelligence\, resilience and cultivate skillful mental habits by learning how the mind and emotions function \nColin De France ( mindfulbreath.ca ) has a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology\, minoring in Food Science from the University of Guelph. He spent the first 25 years of his working career\, as a senior manager\, consultant\, entrepreneur\, and business owner in the food industry. \nAbout 10 years ago\, Colin began a personal journey of self-discovery with an exploration of the practices of meditation and yoga. He has advanced teaching certifications in classical yoga and meditation\, and is a certified Thai yoga massage therapist. \nTeaching mindfulness evolved as a natural extension of his personal practice and formal yoga training. \nColin has conducted mindfulness workshops publicly and for large and small corporations\, as well as running workshops and yoga programs for underprivileged youth in his community. \nIn his experience\, Colin has learned that it is not what we do\, how we look\, or what we have that impacts the quality of our lives\, but rather the level of involvement and awareness we choose to live with. \nMindfulness\, meditation and yoga have been a major part of Colin’s journey and success. Giving back\, Colin’s desire is to share the tools and techniques for wellbeing with as many people as possible. \nPre-registration is required by getting a ticket at Event Brite .

This event will build upon the inaugural Mindfulness Research Symposium with an aim to explore how mindfulness can address the short-term and long-term impacts of COVID and beyond. An in-person day long Mindfulness Research Symposium is currently being planned for fall of 2021. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – 6:15 pm \nWelcome & presentation on Mindfulness at SickKids by Event Co-Chairs \n6:15 pm -7:45 pm \nKeynote Workshop: Ronald Epstein \n7:45 pm – 8:30 pm \nPanel with Keynote Ronald Epstein & leading guest researchers in the field \n\n\nWorkshop Abstract\nTitle:\nTurning toward dissonance: being present and robust in times of fear and chaos \nLearning objectives:\nDescribe how people tend to respond to threat and “mortality salience” \nReview evidence regarding effects of mindfulness-based practices for health professionals on well-being\, clinical effectiveness\, job engagement and teamwork \nDemonstrate simple practices that can help health professionals and leaders be more attentive\, curious\, present\, open and connected in facing these threats \nDescribe benefits and challenges in creating a sense of community and solidarity \nHealthcare professionals are on the frontlines facing the coronavirus pandemic\, political tensions and racial injustice\, and most are feeling vulnerable and uncertain about the future; our professional roles\, personal identities and the lives of our loved ones are on the line. Yet\, it is possible to help ourselves and others face these challenges feeling robust\, connected and effective. In this workshop\, Dr Epstein will discuss models that help understand and explore common reactions to these extraordinary stressors\, and show how\, by developing habits of attentiveness and curiosity when experiencing threat\, we can become more connected to patients and colleagues\, more compassionate to ourselves and others\, and more effective as clinicians and leaders. He will propose some simple practices that can be used during the workday to promote presence\, curiosity and attentiveness\, and help us thrive amid chaos\, fear and uncertainty. Finally\, he will present data suggesting ways in which mindful practice interventions enhance well-being\, effectiveness\, job engagement and teamwork in health care settings. \n\n\n\nProfile\nRonald M. Epstein\, M.D. is Professor of Family Medicine\, Psychiatry & Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He is board-certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He serves as Director of the Center for Communication and Disparities Research and as Director of the Dean’s Teaching Fellowship Program for junior and mid-career faculty. \nDr. Epstein’s NIH-\, AHRQ- and foundation-funded studies have added to our understanding of the impact of patient-physician relationships and communication on health\, the process of care and health care costs. In particular\, his research has focused on patient-centered care\, patient influence on clinicians’ practice patterns\, and clinician mindfulness and self-awareness. Dr. Epstein’s research has addressed important barriers to communication\, compassion and patient/family-centered care. His observational and intervention studies have focused on AIDS\, depression\, somatization\, advanced cancer and care at the end of life\, and also address racial and social disparities in the achievement of patient-centered care. His seminal work on mindful practice and shared mind addresses how self-awareness of underlying biases and attitudes influences the patient-physician relationship and quality of care. \nOver the past 25 years\, Dr. Epstein has developed innovative educational programs in mindful practice\, communication skills\, the patient-physician relationship\, physician self-awareness and assessment of professional competence\, including peer assessment. His widely cited papers on educational theory and practice have been published in JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2009\, his team demonstrated the positive effects of an educational program in mindful communication on physician empathy\, burnout and clinical care. He has over 170 peer-reviewed publications relating to communication in medicine and medical education\, and an additional 60 chapters\, editorials and monographs. He has produced influential monographs on patient-centered care for the National Cancer Institute (2007) and American Board of Internal Medicine (2008). \n\n\nEvent Co-Chairs\nElli Weisbaum has worked internationally facilitating mindfulness workshops and retreats within the sectors of education\, healthcare and business. This has included work in Canada\, Bhutan\, India\, Germany\, France\, the UK and USA. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Mindful Self Compassion with Barb Smith: a free evening workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported program designed to cultivate self-compassion and is based on the groundbreaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Chritopher Germer. \nMindfulness opens us to the present moment. Kindness and compassion opens our hearts to suffering so that we can give ourselves what we need. Common humanity opens us to our inter-relatedness so that we realize that we are not alone. \nResearch has demonstrated that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being\, less anxiety\, depression and stress\, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise and satisfying personal relationships. MSC practices enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care\, and understanding. \nStudies confirm that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being; less anxiety\, depression and stress; maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise and more satisfying personal relationships!  And it is easier than you think. \nConsider attending this workshop if you are experiencing: \n\nirritability\nburn out or care-giver fatigue                                             \ndifficult emotions\nrelentless inner critic\nshame and other negative emotions\njudgment towards others\ndifficulty in interpersonal relationships\nrumination\nlittle joy or appreciation in your life\nsuffering\n\nA moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life.” – Christopher Germer \nThis workshop will be an introduction to MSC and it’s origins along with  introducing some of the basic MSC practices. SUMMARY:Mindful Self Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an evidence-based\, 8-week\, training program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research of Dr. Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Dr. Christopher Germer\, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness\, care and understanding. \n \nSelf-compassion can be learned by anyone\, even those who feel uncomfortable when they are good to themselves. It is a courageous attitude that stands up to harm– including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism\, self-isolation\, or self-absorption. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience\, allows us to admit and accept our shortcomings\, motivate ourselves with kindness\, forgive ourselves when needed\, relate wholeheartedly to others\, and be more authentically ourselves. Rapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being\, less anxiety\, less depression and stress\, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise\, and more satisfying personal relationships. And it is easier than you think! \nTaught by MSC Trained Teachers\, Mary Linda Burgess and Natalie Sobel. For more information\, see email and website below.
